چکیده

The United States’ primary transportation energy sources are fossil fuels, namely, gasoline and diesel. These products have high environmental, security, and financial costs. A strong emphasis has been placed on biofuels, especially ethanol and biodiesel, to lessen the United States’ reliance on fossil fuels. Historically, high production costs, lack of infrastructure, return on investment anxieties, and concerns about scaling-up production have slowed the development of these alternative technologies. Today, biotechnological solutions are lowering productions costs and making large-scale production more economically feasible. Patents can lessen anxieties about investment, as they provide long-term protection1

The Viability of Biofuels in Developing Countries: Successes, Failures, and Challenges

In the last few decades, finding alternatives to fossil fuels has become a hot issue across all international frontiers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shed light on the feasibility of using biofuels to meet the growing energy demand as well as to reduce CO2 emissions which are a major cause of global warming, especially in the transportation sector. The...

Biofuels for Aviation:

However, aviation biofuels are not just a lobbying gimmick. Oil and biotech companies, airlines and aircraft manufacturers, government agencies (particularly in the US) and venture capitalists are investing large sums into research and development of biofuels for aircraft. Recent test flights have shown that biofuel use in aviation is technically possible. Two types of aviation biofuels are in ...

Proteomic approaches in microalgae: perspectives and applications

Biofuels are the promising sources which are produced by various microalgae or in the form of metabolic by-products from organic or food waste products. Microalgae have been widely reported for the production of biofuels since these have a high storage of lipids as triacylglycerides, which can mainly be converted into biofuels. Recently, products such as biodiesel, bioethanol and biogas have re...

An overview of key pretreatment processes employed for bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels and value added products

The hunt for alternative sources of energy generation that are inexpensive, ecofriendly, renewable and can replace fossil fuels is on, owing to the increasing demands of energy. One approach in this direction is the conversion of plant residues into biofuels wherein lignocellulose, which forms the structural framework of plants consisting of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, is first broken ...

Current Challenges in Commercially Producing Biofuels from Lignocellulosic Biomass

Biofuels that are produced from biobased materials are a good alternative to petroleum based fuels. They offer several benefits to society and the environment. Producing second generation biofuels is even more challenging than producing first generation biofuels due the complexity of the biomass and issues related to producing, harvesting, and transporting less dense biomass to centralized bior...
